SPOTTING FAKE SONY MDR-7506 HEADPHONES
I ordered a pair of Sony MDR-7506 headphones on November 6, 2018 from EBay and after a
week, I noticed that the seller had created a shipping label via FedEx,
however FedEx had not picked the shipment up.Upon further investigating, I looked up the
sellers profile and his rating
was 98.3 percent positive feedback which is not that good for 354 transactions and
him being an EBay member only since April 6, 2017. Also, I looked at the
negative reviews and I observed a buyer had ordered a pair of the identical
Sony MDR-7506 headphones this month and stated, "They are as fake as a 3 dollar bill."
Other buyers complained about being sold fake watches, etc. and getting no
response and/or getting the run around from this particular seller.
REQUESTED A REFUND
I contacted the seller via EBay and got all kind of excuses and finally told
them if those headphones were a fake, to cancel my order and issue a refund immediately.
I let the seller know that I was retired from the North Carolina Department
of Corrections aka NCDPS and have access to the State Attorney Generals
Office and the Consumer Protection Specialists Division and would definitely
file a complaint if I needed to, not only to EBay, but US Customs as well.
The seller cancelled my order and refunded my money on November 18, 2018.
I later checked the
FedEx tracking number for the package and it was picked up by FedEx on the
21st, three days after my order was cancelled and a refund was issued to my
Pay Pal account,
whereas it was scheduled for delivery on the 27th via FedEx Smart Post. The seller sent a message via
EBay and wanted me to return the package and not to open it
with some kind of lame excuse as it might get damaged. He also wanted
me to send the package to them prepaid and they would issue me a credit to
my Pay Pal account.
I ordered a pair of Sony MDR-7506 from
Musician's Friend via the web and had them in
three days and they are genuine Sony MDR-7506 headphones.
The old cliché "A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS" and true
indeed in this case!
GENUINE ON THE LEFT - FAKE ON THE RIGHT
I received the package from the EBay seller on November 26, 2018 and the headphones as
one customer stated, "Was as fake as a 3 dollar
bill." I got my genuine pair of Sony MDR-7506 headphones out
I received from
Musician's Friend and placed them side by side and took some photographs aka pixs of them.
Everything about the fake pair
of headphones was very obvious.
The pair of headphones on the left are genuine Sony headphones. The
font on the fake pair on the right is different and the Professional label
is out of line with the writing and the wrong shad of blue. The
letters on the fake pair on the right are not as crisp and appear to be some
type of photocopy. Also, the
texture of the plastic on the fake pair on the right is much coarser than the
genuine on the left, of which the
genuine on the left look and feel like metal.
The stitching is different on the fake on the right....my bad for the out
of focus pix.
The shrink tubing wrap type protector for the mini-plug/cord is much looser on the fake
pair on the right than the genuine on the left.
I had already thrown away the clear bag for the headphone coiled cord, of
which the genuine secured the clear bag with clear tape, whereas the fake uses a
twist tie to secure the bag.
The box has numerous differences; the fake on the right has the wrong
shade of blue, the font is different and not aligned, whereas the genuine pair
box on the left has a bar code on
the box with other info.
The original genuine box on the left has a double thickness type of construction with a flat
rim, whereas the
fake on the right is very thin walled with a round rim. The shade of blue is much
different also. The fake box on the right is shorter than the genuine
Sony box on the left!
The cloth liner for the plastic insert is different also. The cloth
liner on fake
on the right is not glued to the white plastic liner, whereas the genuine on
the left
is glued to the liner with neat folds and the ends of the cloth liner is not frayed
like the fake on the right.
The Service Manual inserts are different also. The original border
on the genuine on the left is very shinny, different shade of blue and the fake on the
right appears to be a photocopy of the original with the wrong font of SONY
at the top left hand corner.
The outside of the display wrapper is different also. The original
on the left has a different font and the lower portion is more precisely
aligned than the fake on the right.
The genuine storage bag on the left is smaller than the fake on the
right. You can't see it in the pix, but on the left genuine bag, it has
the SONY logo embossed into the material. The material is much
different also with the genuine being similar to heavy nylon cloth outside with a
soft liner inside versus the fake on the
right which is some type of plastic imitation looking leather.
NOTE: In 2018, Sony no longer inks in white the Sony log on
the bag.
This EBay seller sent the headphones in the display package in a soft
mailer which had some bubble wrap around the headphone package...not the best for product protection! I received my
genuine
Sony MDR-7506 headphones in a well packaged cardboard box from Musician's
Friend.
GENUINE SONY PICTURES POSTED - FAKE HEADPHONES RECEIVED
The EBay seller also used a genuine pair of Sony MDR-7506 headphone and/or
stock photo
of a genuine pair of Sony MDR-7506 headphones to post product pictures on
the EBay add, but definitely was not the headphones I received as evidenced
by the side by side comparison of the genuine versus the fake headphones!
I didn't check the sound quality of the fake versus the genuine, but
those that have checked them said the genuine headphones sounded
much better. Also, there was a measured difference in the impedance of
the genuine versus the fake Sony MDR-7506 headphones per a YouTube video.
There are several excellent video comparisons of genuine versus fake Sony
MDR-7506 headphones on
YouTube which detail what I have duplicated
myself!
RING AROUND THE ROSES
The vendor/seller sent the following concerning the headphones via EBay message:
hi thanks for your message i need to clarify the
item is Genuine because our supplier direct order the stock from distributor
no worries please return the item to the following address so that i can
check with my supplier regarding your concern
IDS Online Corp (Se011)
2A Corn Road
Dayton, NJ 08810
no worries as promised, after return the item please send me the receipt and
i will pay you via paypal
hope to hear from you soon once again sorry for any inconvenience caused
The seller is based out of Malaysia and the headphones received were
shipped from a different address in New Jersey than the above address
and by the above message, declaring the item is genuine is an outright
lie! As posted in this short story, "A
picture is worth a thousand words", I rest my case!
I replied to the vendor via EBay messaging and stated for him to send me
a prepaid mailing label.
Here is his reply on 11-28-18: hi thanks for
your message i am so sorry just a small seller so i can't buy the prepaid
mail no worries as promised, after return the item please send me the
receipt and i will pay you via paypal
I replied that I wasn't going to mail the fake headphones back to him
prepaid. I would see what the shipping charges would cost and let him
know the amount via EBay messaging and he could deposit that amount to my
Paypal account, but I wasn't going to ship them prepaid since it will
probably cost more to ship them to the New Jersey address (which was
different from the sending address) than what he paid for the fake
headphones.

In conclusion, trying to save
a few bucks (maybe 10 to 15 dollars) has cost me time and aggravation, and
did lose .69 cents in fees from Pay Pal. I guess "every
blind hog will find an acorn once in a while." Most of the time, you get what you pay for!
I will definitely do further checking on vendors selling on EBay in the
future such as checking their review feedback rating and of course reviewing
all the negative feedback reviews posted. I posted a negative review
for this transaction on EBay because the item received was a fake, even
though I was refunded my money!

MAILED FAKE HEADPHONES BACK TO SELLER
I received $ 8.75 to the my Pay Pal account minus Pay Pal transaction fee
of .69 cents, therefore this ordeal cost me .69 cents in cash outlay plus some
very good learning experience. I sent the fake headphones via Priority
Mail 3 day delivery to the address provided above on 11-30-18 and sent the seller the USPS
tracking number via EBay messaging.
The seller wanted me to revise my negative feedback rating, but due to
the headphones being a fake and
regardless of the seller refunding my money, I cannot do so in good
conscience. There is nothing positive about being dishonest!
As I have stated numerous times on this website,
"Most of the time, you get what you pay for" and trying
to save a few bucks can cost you in the long run!

UPDATE: The package was delivered to an individual at the
Dayton, NJ address on 12-05-18 at 2:12 P.M. and I noticed on 12-07-18 that
the EBay seller had one (1) pair of headphones for sale; no doubt the ones I
returned to him. The seller has sold 128 of those headphones per his
account info!
