HEALTH CRAFT ROTARY FOOD CUTTER
Over the past fifty (50) years, my bride and myself have used all types of
kitchen appliances and gadgets ranging from the simple to the more complex
in an attempt to make preparing food better, easier, more economical and
less time consuming.
This product review will be about using a
Health Craft manually operated rotary food cutter, of which there
are many makes and models available which basically utilize five (5)
different cones aka cutting cylinders and range in price for the plastic
housing model at 25 +- bucks to a few hundred dollars for the top of the line
all metal designer color units. This type of rotary
food cutter design has been
around for many decades and still going strong.
PERSONAL HISTORY OF USING A ROTARY FOOD CUTTER
When we purchased a set of
Townecraft "Waterless" Cookware
sometime in the late 1970s and/or early 1980s (guessing at the time frame), we
received a rotary food cutter as a bonus gift. The unit featured the
same five cutter cones presently in use today and had a round suction base
that locked to your table and/or counter top by operating a lever. The
unit worked for some time, however the suction cup mechanism quickly failed
and the unit collected dust for years in our kitchen cabinets. I
believe I added an auxiliary base from a plastic cutting board to the unit to utilize a C-clamp to keep the
unit in place. I don't remember what became of it; either trashed or
given away. I think I used the auxiliary base for something else since
the unit was not being used anyway.FOOD PROCESSOR AND
MANUAL GRATER
We have used the manual multi-sided rectangular shaped food grater for over
half a century and currently have one made from stainless steel. We
have used a Kitchen Aid food processor for many decades as well and both of
those appliances perform as they were designed to do. The food
processor is more efficient, but requires more clean up time. For
making for small amounts of salads and cole and/or Deli type slaws, stir
fry's, etc., I tend to use the manual food grater or simply use the
Kitchen Chef knife.
I still use the manual grater above for
cole slaw, etc.
The Kitchen Aid food processor has been used
much over the
decades and still going strong.
ROTARY FOOD CUTTER RESEARCH
I had been thinking about purchasing a rotary food cutter and after doing
research on YouTube, etc., I decided on the
Health Craft rotary food cutter
which is "top of the line" in my
humble opinion and a variant of the Original model patented in 1939 by M. H.
Graham.
I checked on EBay and there were several used ones for sale and won a bid on
one for $ 36 dollars and an additional $ 16.20 shipping charges, whereas the item was in
excellent condition; only
missing the Health Craft decal.
After receiving the unit, I contacted Chef David Knight of Health Craft and
he is going to try and get me a replacement decal for the unit. Chef
Knight later advised, the company minimum order from their vendor was 1000 units,
therefore the decal did not materialize.
I replaced the metal finger guard and pin with the above Health Craft
plastic model finger guard which slides on and off on the lip of the food
cutter housing.
I gave the above unit a quick field test and the suction base is super
strong and took some effort to release the unit from our work island top
which is a good thing!
NOTE: I jumped the gun so to speak on the evaluation since
in couple times of using it, the suction base released before I was finished
using the machine!
I ran a couple potatoes through the various cones to test out the cutter
cones and the unit worked flawless and is a breeze to operate. The
clean up takes less than a minute. I will
post pixs when I do the next
Classic Deli Slaw recipe or whichever
recipe I decide on.
ROTARY FOOD CUTTER USAGE
I plan to do a
BBQ meal this afternoon consisting of pulled pork smoked
BBQ,
slaw,
French fries, hush puppies and
elected to give the Health Craft rotary
food cutter a good workout.

Pix below of the slaw ready for a salad dressing. This slaw is similar
to our marinated slaw
recipe as far as the veggies used, but will use a sweet based vegetable oil
dressing from our
crunchy salad recipe.
For processing home made French Fries, I prefer the
Weston Restaurant
Quality French Fry Cutter, but this rotary food cutter will do
fries as well.
RAINBOW SLAW
Close-up pix of the Rainbow Slaw after being in the
refrigerator two days. Beauteous
for sure!
I
used cone # 2 for the most part and used cone # 1 to grate the carrot.
If you desire a much coarser cut, use cone # 5. There is a YouTube video of Chef David Knight using the Health Craft rotary
food cutter and he explains in detail the various cone cutter cylinders
used. The hyperlink is here:

As stated earlier, the clean-up is a breeze using the
Health Craft rotary food cutter.
BBQ PLATE SERVED
Close-up pix. Can you say "beautimous" out loud?
I shared this BBQ plate with my
bride.....I loaded the plate down for the pix.
I named the slaw I made
Rainbow Slaw due to the colors, however
there are many recipes posted on line with the same name. I will add
my own version of this Rainbow Slaw to my
Salads
page.

ROTARY FOOD CUTTER'S ACHILLES HEEL
The only problem I have experienced with the rotary food cutter over the
decades is the suction cup will not keep the base of the food cutter
attached to the surface for the duration of usage that is needed. It
is imperative that you keep the surface aka countertop, table top clean
along with the rubber base, otherwise you loose suction quickly.
Many years, ago I solved the problem by removing the suction cup and
attaching the base to an auxiliary board and "C" clamping the rotary cutter
to the table top which worked great.
Not too many months ago, I purchased a new suction cup assembly and had the
same problem and decided to remove the suction cup and attach the rotary
food cutter to an auxiliary base.
Suction cup removed from the base.
I attached a piece of soft pine board 4 1/4 inches square inside the base of
the food cutter and drilled four (4) pilot holes and countersunk for 1 1/4
inch drywall screws. I had to cut a notch for the two protrusions
inside the base assembly.
I ripped a scrap aka unallocated piece of white pine board to the proper
width for mounting the rotary food cutter to the base board using four (4)
brass wood screws inserted from the bottom of the base board with
countersinked holes.
I rounded the corner of the base board to fit the profile of our island/work
station.
I don't think there will be a problem now with the rotary food cutter not
staying attached to the island/work station.......grin if you must!
