I met Bill Escott sometime in 1992 at the Anson Correctional Center
where he was hired as the Armory Officer for the new facility Brown Creek
Correctional Institution that was under construction and located on
the back side of our facility. Brown Creek Correctional Institution
(BCCI) opened sometime around April of 1993 and housed medium custody grade
felon inmates whereas The Anson Correctional Center housed minimum
custody inmates both misdemeanants and felons.
Below is an aerial pix
taken on 09-01-03 of BCCI and LCI (Lanesboro Correctional
Institution under construction) with Bill Escott the pilot and Bill Porter
taking pictures. Red arrow indicates
the small building (Master Control, Gatehouse and Armory) that was Bill and my self's normal duty
station. By the few number of employee vehicles in the parking
lot to the right, it had to be a Holiday (Labor Day):
Bill attended one of the
first NC Department of Correction Armorer schools for Smith and Wesson and I
attended the next class around 1995 when I got transferred to BCCI on an
administrative transfer....guess I was a problem child or something but it
was like putting a rabbit in the briar patch....grin if you must!
After a couple years at BCCI, Bill was nearing his (second) retirement and I was
assigned to the Operations Section for On The Job Training under the
tutelage of Bill. Bill was one of the most talented, intelligent and
knowledgeable men that I have ever known and he taught me a lot. There
was nothing that Bill aka "Wild Bill" couldn't do and he was not afraid to
try any new task that came up. Bill maintained a very positive mental
attitude and a total pleasure to be around. I never heard him raise
his voice or ever get upset even though the job at times would certainly
warrant such behavior! I had been around inmates for a much
longer period of time than Bill and was able to more effectively manipulate the management
team to my advantage, whereas they did run Bill ragged at times since he
didn't turn them down for anything, yet he never complained.......that was just the nature of Bill
and he would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. Bill
was a professional all the way, skilled in carpentry, instrument
calibration, weapons, mechanics, electrical, machinist and anything he wanted to do. Bill was born in Grand Rapids Michigan
in 1937 and also retired from the United States Air Force and was an airplane pilot
and flight instructor. I flew with Bill a few times and it was amazing
how he had control of the airplane and the flight was as smooth as it gets.
My bride also flew with us and she was totally impressed with his flying
skills.......No, we never
joined the
mile high club; the single engine plane was a little too cramped
for that and the date on our birth certificate could have been a factor
also........grin if you must!

check at the Anson County Airport on 09-23-04:

Below pix of the Club plane at the Cheraw, SC airport either taxing in or
taking off on 09-23-04 with Greg Benner the pilot.:
Bill retired in 1998 from the NC Department of Correction and we still
maintained contact and we went out for breakfast with John Gaddy, retired
Correctional Lieutenant also of BCCI when time permitted. I took
pictures of our "outings" but they are currently hidden in a hundred or more
CDs that I made since 2000 from the digital images and will add pixs as I locate them.
So far, I have only been able to locate a few images and will post them
here. I think some of the pixs have succumbed to loosing a couple hard
drives without proper back-up CDs and DVDs; sometimes we learn the hard way.
Below pix of Bill Escott on the right and Jeff Cloud taken at
the Anson County Airport lounge on 09-01-03:
Below pix of Bill's approach to the Anson County Airport as seen from the
cockpit on 09-01-03. I had Bill to fly me around and I took
aerial pixs of the BCCI Correctional Facility and our Firing Range to
document a report concerning some range issues and other places of interest
in Anson County.
Pix below of Bill and his bride June taken on 08-15-08 at the ole Light
House Inn Seafood Restaurant in Ansonville, NC. John Gaddy and his
friend Virginia, myself and my bride aka Joyce enjoyed a good meal and
fellowship:
Virginia McSwain and John Gaddy............yours truly was behind the
camera.
Below is pix of Bill taken at BJ's Restaurant in Polkton, NC back in
February of 2011. John Gaddy had a senior moment and missed the
breakfast with Bill and myself.
Bill had an ole truck that he fixed up while attending the Automotive
Class at the South Piedmont Community College campus in Polkton after
his retirement from the NCDOC and did find a pix of him with the truck stripped
down to the bare bones and might add Bill was too....grin if you must.
I believe Bill emailed me the pix below:
I will try and get a pix of the finished truck and I guarantee you will
not be able to recognize it. It is to my understanding he purchased a
couple "junked" trucks of the same model to get it back to factory
specifications again.
My friend Bill Escott, retired Armory Officer
and my mentor with the
NCDOC at BCCI, passed away early Tuesday
morning after a long illness and I want to keep his memory alive and will use one
of his favorite sayings; "Yesterday is
History, Today is a Gift and Tomorrow is a Mystery."
Bill was a First Class All American, loved, supported and served his Country and is greatly missed by his family and
friends. I am grateful and privileged to have worked with and known
Bill Escott as my friend!
Bill had a graveside service at the Hopewell United Methodist Church
cemetery on June 14, 2013 at 11am with full military honors from members of
the Shaw Air Force Base Honor Guard. Bill is survived by his wife June
of the home; daughters, Dana Craven of Peachland; Debbie Tavarez of San
Antonio, TX, Kathy Provoast of San Diego, CA and Theresa Escott of Olympia,
Washington; brother Ray Escott of Dearborn, Michigan; grandchildren: Jason
and Jeremy Grimm, Katie and Michael Provoast, Aleina, Joshua and Zachary
Tavarez and Brianna Roberts.
Farewell my friend Bill, until we meet again!
In closing, "Two of the greatest
ships that ever sailed: Friendship and Fellowship!"

UPDATE: June Escott, Bill's wife passed away on 06-23-13
after a battle with cancer. My heart goes out to the Escott family for
their loss. My parents too went on to be with our Lord and Savior
and they no longer have pain and suffering but it sure does hurt not to have
them with us.
2 Corinthians 5
King James Version (KJV)
5 For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were
dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands,
eternal in the heavens.
2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with
our house which is from heaven:
3 If so be that being clothed we shall not be found naked.
4 For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened: not
for that we would be unclothed, but clothed upon, that mortality might be
swallowed up of life.
5 Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also
hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at
home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the
body, and to be present with the Lord.
9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be
accepted of him.
10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that
every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or
bad.
11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we
are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
12 For we commend not ourselves again unto you, but give you occasion
to glory on our behalf, that ye may have somewhat to answer them which glory in appearance, and not in
heart.
13 For whether we be beside ourselves, it is to God: or whether we be
sober, it is for your cause.
14 For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge,
that if one died for all, then were all dead:
15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not
henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and
rose again.
16 Wherefore henceforth know we no man after the flesh: yea, though
we have known Christ after the flesh, yet now henceforth know we him no
more.
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old
things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by
Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto
himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.
20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech
you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God.
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we
might be made the righteousness of God in him.
