XANDER'S BUCKET TOMATOESOur youngest
Grandson Xander McKnight Gonzales has been interested in gardening and the
past couple years have helped me plant my
tomato plants, etc. He wanted some
tomato plants at his home and I told him, We would get a couple bucket
tomato plants going.
I already had some five (5) gallon buckets, Epson Salt and purchased
MiracleGro potting soil from our local Tractor Supply and a bag of 10-10-10
fertilizer to get the project underway.
I stopped by BoJangles and got bacon/egg/cheese biscuits for four (4) of
us including my bride and got a sausage biscuit for Miss Lily. After
bringing back a bacon/egg/cheese biscuit and seasoned fries for my bride, I
drove to Lilesville, NC and we had a quick breakfast from BoJangles.
Miss Lily was still sleepy and stayed in bed.
Xander and myself rode to Hamlet Hardware in Hamlet, NC and purchased the
tomato plants and headed back to Wadesboro, NC. I let Xander do most
of the "work" on the bucket tomatoes; what I would call OJT,
"On The Job Training."
I marked where I wanted Xander to drill the 1/4 inch diameter holes;
being 4 about 1.5 inches from the bottom of the bucket orientated ninety (90)
degrees apart +-. The above pix is a reenactment since Xander drilled the
holes while we were in my basement woodworking shop....grin if you must!
After drilling the holes for water drainage, I had Xander to fill the
buckets with the potting soil mix.
After filling the buckets, a hole was dug in the center deeper than
needed for the plants and about a tablespoon of Epson Salt and 10-10-10
Fertilizer was added and then a good handful plus of potting soil on top of
that so the tomato plant roots would not be touching the fertilizer to keep
the roots from getting burned from the fertilizer.
The picture doesn't reveal the depth of the hole, but it is
there......grin if you must!
Both buckets were completed and we watered them before transporting them
back to his home.

PLANTING TOMATO PLANTS IN THE TOMATO PATCH
After the bucket tomato project, we started on the Porter Family tomato
patch. I had Xander to rake the patch level/flat and started digging
the holes for the tomato plants. I purchased a couple large three (3)
gallon size plants and the balance of twenty two (22) plants were small.
I didn't use all the area tilled up area due to one end stays in the shade too
much and doesn't produce much tomatoes at all.
By the time I got twenty (20) of the tomato plants in the ground, I was
totally exhausted and called it a day. I will get the other four (4)
plants in the ground on Monday, our Lord willing of course.
The two larger plants already has blooms and small tomatoes on them and
watered all the plants later in the afternoon.
Hopefully, Xander's bucket tomatoes will produce and will have to wait
and see.
It is good to spend quality time with the younger folks teaching them
helpful things that they can use later on in life if they so desire.
