FRIED APPLE PIE SALE
Sixteen members of The
Wadesboro Church of God met at the
fellowship building starting around 8:00 AM on February 21, 2019 to fry up a large
batch of their famous and much in demand
Fried Apple Pies. Fried Apple
Pies is one of their mainstay sellers to help raise money for the various
projects and programs the Church provides.
My Number One Sister-in-Law, Rachel Myers on my bride's side of the
family usually spearheads such projects with the help of the Ladies
Ministries, whereas Sister Myers asked me to help with frying the apple pies
and I agreed. Rachel's husband Wink, normally mans one of the electric
skillets, but his knees has been giving him problems of late.
Boyce Adcock, my
bride's twin was already at the fellowship
hall when I arrived and had a box of BoJangles Sausage and Egg biscuits
waiting and I devoured one very quickly. I don't think the biscuit had
time to settle on my taste buds and as the ole country boy said, I must have
been "hongry" for sure.
Boyce took charge of the second electric skillet and Bruce High gave me a
few pointers on turning fried apple pies, even though this wasn't my first
rodeo ride with fried
apple pies and did appreciate his help and assistance. It wasn't long
before the ladies had an assembly line going and soon got ahead of the
electric skillets production. The skillet that I was using was very slow to heat
up, but once it got up to around 350 to 375 +- degrees, fried apple pies changed
from an albino to
a golden brown color and Wayne Kelley would spread them out the counter top
which was overlaid with paper towels to help absorb any extra cooking oil.
Bruce High kept things moving along transporting pies in the white from the
ladies work station to the electric skillets and performed other duties as
well.
It didn't take too long to realize you had to go beyond the Midas Touch
and handle those apple pies in the white as if you were transporting a vial
of nitroglycerin while walking on rocky ground. The pie dough was thin
and very, very delicate and metamorphosed into something wonderful to the
eyes and the palate.
Everything was moving in harmony like a well conducted orchestra and it
wasn't too long before the "beautimous"
looking golden brown fried apple pies were heading out the door for
delivery. The Wadesboro Town Hall placed an ordered for ninety-five
(95) pies with other deliveries taking place as the pies were cooled down
and wrapped in wax paper.
Sister McGrady gave Pastor aka Bishop Sam Abee some pointers on wrapping
the fried apple pies and I believe she was using a standard Butchers Wrap
technique if my memory is correct. Pastor Abee was keeping tabs on the
sale figures and was doing some serious ciphering like
Jethro Bodine aka Max
Baer, Jr. of the Beverly Hillbillies.
Following are those that helped with the fried apple pie sale: Boyce
Adcock, Rose and Bruce High, Rachel and Wink Myers, Joanne and Sam Abee,
Jenny McGrady, Allie Newton, Carol Shackleford, Donna Savoca, Mickey Porter,
Linda and Wayne Kelly, Nicole O'Neal and Rick Colson. A couple of the
regulars were not able to attend due to conflicting obligations and
sickness.

Toward the end of frying the apple pies, several of the Ladies and Bruce
High started preparing some lunch for us consisting of cheesy dogs, stewed
white potatoes, pinto beans and ham hocks, potato salad, spicy chow chow, deviled eggs,
boiled cabbage, baked cornbread, sweet potato casserole and a few other
items of which my brain doesn't seem to want to recall.
In addition to the regular folks, two recent members being Carol
Shackleford and Donna Savoca got a work out with the rolling pins and
forming the apple pies ready for the hot frying oil.
Upon completion of this frying apple pie project, we enjoyed a meal after Pastor aka Bishop
Sam Abee blessed the food. As I like to say and publish at every
opportunity on this website, "Two of the
Greatest Ships that ever Sailed, Friendship and Fellowship",
and we certainly had good prevailing sailing wind today.
FRIED APPLE PIE SALE STATS
According to Sister Joanne Abee, 315 apple pies were fried including three (3)
rejects, of which got sold and/or eaten in house......grin if you must. I
purchased one for my bride and myself. We shared the fried apple pie
that resembled a prehistoric carp fish. It sure did taste good!
The unique shape above was due to another wrap of dough overlaid on top
since the pie had burst open before it was fried. It definitely did not alter the
taste......grin if you must!
After expenses, around 400 to 410 dollars was made.
In summation, we had a great time and Pastor Sam Abee brought
out his Martin guitar with myself bringing out my Porter Custom curly maple
resophonic guitar.
Brother Abee did the singing and yours truly did some picking.
