PAINT ROLLER TRAY HOLDER
REASON FOR THE PAINT TRAY HOLDER
What painting I have done using a ladder and paint roller tray has been
awkward to say the least with no efficiency whatsoever!
I went on line and viewed several different products available for usage
on a standard step ladder and extension ladder and did find one called
the Ladder Companion and ordered one on 09-26-2023. The Ladder
Companion is designed more for holding tools and accessories than for a
paint roller tray holder and I gleaned information from the pictures
posted. I checked to be sure there was not a patent on said Ladder
Companion and it was not. However, the seller has been
extremely slow to deliver said product and needed one for the first week
in October while the weather is still conducive for painting.
Also, the seller had a couple complaints on file with the BBB for
delivery issues. Therefore, I decided to build one
(impromptu) out of
scrap aka unallocated wood and make it as
light as possible and still be sturdy enough to hold a gallon of paint
and large enough to hold a standard size paint roller tray that is
available locally and from other suppliers.
NOTE: I filed a complaint against Ladder Companion, LLC
with my credit card company and they refunded my money temporarily
pending notifying Ladder Companion, LLC and as of 10-20-2023, I have not
received the Ladder Companion product and really don't need it now!
UPDATE: Kelly Pittenger Mon, Nov 6, 9:15 PM (15 hours ago)
from Ladder Companion, LLC.
Good evening! Due to our website being down and not communicating
orders to us, your order was never received until 11/3/23. We have
expedited your order and it shipped today. I deeply apologize!
Please let me know if you do not receive your Ladder Companion by Friday
of this week.
I emailed Kelly Pittenger back and advised her I would be returning the
product back to her unopened, since I no longer need it. I needed
the product by the second week in September. I also advised her,
there was no delay in processing my credit card from their website!
I tried a few times via telephone, but went to voice mail and never got
a return phone call from them either.
NOTE: In my humble opinion, the Ladder Companion was never
shipped on 11/3/23 as stated and my credit card company totally refunded
my money!
PAINT TRAY HOLDER CONSTRUCTION
I didn't do a complete photo pictorial essay of what I was doing, but used scrap
aka unallocated wood mostly pine boards band sawed to about 3/8 inch in
width and cut down a couple spare pickets (left over from my
wheelchair ramp project) to fit the inside rungs
of my Werner extension ladder. If I am not mistaken, the ladder
rungs are standardized as far as their center to center spacing on the
ladder rails.
The wood paint roller tray platform is 12.5 x 16 x 2 inches which will fit
most standard paint roller trays. I plan to use a small piano type
hinge to allow the tray to pivot on the upper picket that fits inside
the ladder rung. The adjustable support to hold the paint roller
tray platform in position is still on the drawing board, aka in my mind,
grin if you must!
NOTE: The piano type hinge idea didn't pan out; not the proper
movement needed. Will go to plan B.
A few pixs I have taken so far:
The platform is glued up with additional supports and the center strip
will be used to screw the piano type hinge onto it.
The frame is held together will small screws, since end grain wood does
not glue well and offer any strength. The frame will then be glued
down to the platform. I might put a few small screws from the
backside of the platform just for good measure, however the Titebond
Ultimate III glue is stronger than the wood itself.
The wood component to the right is the main body of the paint roller
tray that will slide into the ladder rungs. I drilled out and
routed a cavity about half way through the end support member and glued
and screwed the picket rails to said member. I left the picket
rails long enough to extend out the other side of the extension ladder
and will drill a hole and place a nail into it to keep the unit from
sliding right to left.
The base of the platform ready to be cut to its final length and also
pix of the piano type hinge.
I finished the above on Saturday September 30, 2023 and will start back
on the project on Monday. I don't do any work on Sunday and
respect God's Holy Word!
I could have used some type of metal clamps, but the frame members that
connect to the inside ladder rungs were not round and therefore made
some wood pieces that fit the wood member just mentioned. It is
not the prettiest sight, but believe it will work fine.
Walnut glue to the pine wood cross member and will be used to hold the pivoting
telescopic member that will allow adjustment up and down for the wood
tray that will hold a standard paint roller tray and if not painting,
whatever accessory or tool you need at the time while on the extension
ladder.
Above is the two piece sliding members for the adjustment of the tray.
I will later route a slot down the center of the walnut strip and cut
the final length after testing the movement required. I used the
table saw to cut the groove aka slot in the pine board.
Here is the member with the routed slot and 1/4 x 20 TPI bolt, washer
and Tee threaded knob.
The finished paint tray holder and will give it a test run using the
paint roller tray insert on the North end of our home gable area.
Another view of the paint tray holder. I drilled a hole in the
upper support rail adjacent the ladder on the left side and will insert
a large nail to keep the paint tray holder from moving left to right.
View of the sliding aka pivoting adjustment members. The two inch
depth of the tray will definitely keep a paint tray in place and other
tools as needed when not painting and needing to use an extension
ladder for other purposes.
The size of the paint tray holder is 12 1/2" wide x 16" length and 2"
deep. The weight of the paint tray holder is six (6) pounds and I
believe could easily support fifty (50) pounds.
This project is SN 377.
