BURGERS AND DOGS
My bride wanted to invite our two daughters Laura and Lisa and the three
Grand boys over for sometime now for burgers and hotdogs on the charcoal
grill. We set a date of May 6, 2017 and the weather was cooperating
today pretty good. I can't leave out our only
Granddaughter baby Lily,
who is now two months old and a darling for sure!
It has been a while since I have used the Weber charcoal kettle grill and it
must have thought I had abandoned and forgotten about him; if you don't mind me
personifying the grill.......grin if you must!
My bride, also wanted me to do my signature
baked beans recipe, of which is
an easy recipe to do. I use 1/2 cup of good select dark rum in my
recipe which does add a wonderful flavor to the baked beans. For us
teetotalers, the alcohol does evaporate out.
Today was a rather cool day, with the morning temperatures in the low 50s
and the weather prognosticators are predicting it to get down into the lower 40s
by Sunday morning. My young tomato plants will think they need a
overcoat, having gotten use to the weather in the 70s and 80s at times.
Some days, things go about perfect, but today was one of those days
that I had to struggle getting things done. While assembling the
ingredients for the baked beans, I opened a large 3 pound plus can without a
problem, however a smaller can caused a problem with the manual can opener
not cutting all the way around the perimeter of the lid. I tried to
ply the lid open and when the lid finally released from the can rim, (centrifugal
force) took over and bean juice went in all
directions with yours truly catching most of it on my tee shirt and light
colored pants. Bean juice was on the counter top, on the floor
and there was some clean-up involved before getting the beans into the
casserole dish for the oven. I didn't feel like grinning on this one,
but will just rotated my head to the left and right; maybe just a little
grin.GETTING THE
CHARCOAL FIRED UP
About an hour before our children and grand children were to arrive, I
placed a large chimney full of charcoal on the gas burner to get the
charcoal jump started since it takes about 20 plus minutes to get the
charcoal ready for the grill.
After the charcoal got to glowing pretty good on most of the charcoal
briquettes, it was time to transfer them to the Weber grill. I had the
beef burger already seasoned and aging out in the refrigerator downstairs a few hours
to get all the flavors to marry together.
I seasoned five (5) pounds of 80/20 ground beef and hope I don't break
out into a rash, since I consume far more venison than I do beef.....just
kidding on the rash part. The last of the burgers and dogs on the
grill.
The ole Weber grill does a great job of holding the heat in and has a
good draft design built into bottom of the grill base and also the dome
shaped lid. This is our second Weber charcoal grill. The first
one was given to one of our daughters after the purchase of a large
stainless steel gas grill in
2004, which
currently gets very little usage due to being hooked on the
Ugly Drum Smoker (UDS);
another charcoal cooking/smoking appliance!
CAN YOU SAY "BEAUTIMOUS" OUT LOUD?
There were about 15 burgers made from five (5) pounds of the ground
beef and those were some thick juicy burgers for sure. Those burgers
averaged out to about 1/3 pound each if me GED math is correct.
The burgers and dogs were served with the baked beans, potato chips and
condiments such as; home made
slaw, store bought Ruth's brand Chili,
tomatoes, onion, lettuce, Duke's mayonnaise, French's mustard, Hunt's tomato
ketchup, water and iced tea. I got a little carried away on the brand
names and definitely don't receive any gratuity for endorsing those brands.
No desserts this time.
FAMILY GUESTS ARRIVED
It wasn't too long before our family guests arrived and got a few pixs with
the antiquated Canon 30D 35MM DSLR camera.
Our youngest Grandson, Xander McKnight Gonzales with a good grin going
while playing a game on YouTube, etc.
Baby Lily
was sleeping real good and when the flash went off, she threw her hands out, opened her eyes and
the pacifier went flying from her mouth; startled would be the word of the
day.....we all got a good grin out of that. I think the loud sound of
the shutter is what startled her and not the flash!
Lisa Dianne with a grin going as well. Lisa is the Mother of Xander
and Lily Gonzales.
VITTLE TIME
My bride on the left, Travis Lee in the rear,
Lisa and then Trevor Lane. It was a
good surprise to see that Travis had shaved his full beard off. He said
it was getting too hot for that beard. His brother Trevor, appears to
be growing one in Travis' place.
Xander
with a grin going and eating rather light with only one hotdog that looked
like it was without any condiments on it.
The camera flash, caught
Travis with his eyes closed. I didn't
catch that until I downloaded the pixs and like I said earlier, it just wasn't my best day,
nevertheless, we had a fantastic time. PS: Travis couldn't eat
but one of those monstrous size beef burgers since he had eaten a snack
earlier.
Trevor Lane
getting himself a burger and a dog with the trimmings.
Shane Hough, Laura's friend getting ready to fix a plate of vittles too!
I couldn't catch Laura
still enough for a serious photo, but managed to get this one in.
Joyce aka my
"bride" with that wonderful smile.....she is as beautiful as ever and still
the
"Love of my Life."
IN CLOSING
We had a great time. When our family and friends
get together around some good food, the friendship and fellowship will
naturally flow. It would have been even better, had our son
Bill, Jr., his
sons Will and Jake and Bill's wife Nichol who live in Vista, CA could have
been here with us.
I was planning on giving Xander some shooting
instructions with the ole timey
slingshot,
but Lisa had to leave before we got around to it. We will
do that at a later date.
LEAVING ON A
