Our son Bill, Jr. who lives in California, called and emailed us last
month that he and his Lady friend Nichol Shine had booked tickets for an
Eagles concert in Charlotte, NC on November 15, 2013 and they planed
to fly from San Diego, CA to Newark, NJ and Nichol was taking a flight from
Newark to Norfolk, VA to be with her Mother until the 15th and he would be
flying into Charlotte NC on November 11th and stay with us through Friday
the 15th., etc. They reserved a room at a local bed and breakfast,
The
Forever Inn B & B for the 16th and 17th.
Since we only get to see Bill, Jr. every few years, it was a treat
last year that he was home for a short visit in
December and we had all the
"kids" together which is always great and looking forward to this visit as
well. Below pix of Bill and my bride doing a little bonding while
working out their lap tops....grin if you must!
My bride and I decided to celebrate Thanksgiving early this 2013 season
since Bill, Jr. would be here until November 18, 2013 and my bride made a
few phone calls and got our meal planned out with various ones bringing
special request food items, etc., and got the turkeys out of the freezer and
placed into the basement game refrigerator to thaw out. It has been customary since
1997 to deep fry a turkey or two and we
no longer oven bake turkeys anymore. They are so much better deep fried
in my humble opinion (IMHO) being moist,
juicy and succulent with a little heat on the outside aka bark from the
cayenne pepper that is hand rubbed into the pores of the skin. Deep
frying the traditional Holiday turkey also frees
the oven up for other things.
Holidays are a special time for family and friends to enjoy the
fellowship and friendship of one another and most definitely give thanks to
our Lord and Savior for his many blessings which is part of my personal
daily prayer. It is hard to image that there are many in our Country
and County that go hungry whether brought about by their own negligence or things
that are beyond their control but it does happen especially with our
poor current economy!
Please check my Thanksgiving 2012
page for additional information concerning the origin of our National
Thanksgiving Holiday.
Our Early Thanksgiving Holiday meal was to commence around 1:00 PM on
November 17, 2013 and
got my deep fryer turkey pot set up and planned to deep fry two 15 pound
Butterball whole turkeys of which
the Butterball brand is the best for deep frying
IMHO. Deep frying turkeys with several gallons of
blistering hot oil can be a serious FIRE
safety hazard and extreme caution
must be used at all times to prevent a fire and burns. I normally do
my deep frying on our open carport which many recommend that you
do not for safety reasons but I
made sure the area was safe and have a special home made long handled rod with a hook
on one end to lower
the turkey into the hot oil very slowly to keep the hot oil from overflowing
and igniting which is the source of most of the accidents from deep frying
turkeys. The metal triangular coat hanger style device that comes standard
with many top brand name turkey cookers allow your hands too close to the hot oil
when submerging the turkey into the hot oil and is the main culprit for many
deep fried turkey accidents coupled with having oil above the maximum fill
line of the pot. See my
Deep Fried Turkey
page for additional information. Pixs below:
That is one "beautimous" looking golden brown deep fried turkey ready to cool
down and carve.
Our traditional and customary meal consisted of Deep Fried Turkey, Honey Baked Spiral Cut Ham,
Cornbread Dressing, Hashbrown Casserole, Giblet Gravy, Collard Greens, Speckled Butterbeans, Lima
Beans, Yellow Corn, Potato Salad, Deviled Eggs, Green Bean Casserole,
Cranberry Sauce, Sour Cream Cornbread, Yeast Rolls, Pumpkin Pie, Pecan Pie,
Trifle, Zucchini Bread, various
Soft Drinks and Filtered
Water.
My bride greeted and welcomed everyone and refreshed our memory on the
importance of family and friends and Wink Myers gave a prayer blessing the
food before our
meal following the example of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior; MATTHEW 14:19-21 KJV.

There were a total of sixteen (16) that attended our Early Thanksgiving
2013 meal.
Below thumbnails pixs of everyone that attended except Travis Lee
Huneycutt who was out of camera range in our basement on his laptop pc:
Once everyone got their plates filled, it was time to enjoy the meal and
it got a little on the quiet side for awhile......grin if you must!
After an afternoon of wonderful food, friendship and fellowship, I
sipped on a custom brewed dark ale that Bill, Jr. provided and it wasn't long before
everyone went there separate ways.
Our Early Thanksgiving 2013 at the Porter Home was most enjoyable and as
I constantly say and experience every time I have the opportunity,
"Two of the Greatest Ships that ever Sailed,
Friendship and Fellowship." I can still visualize
in my mind's eye, my parents attending our family get together(s)
especially during the Holidays and still miss them dearly of which
true Love is eternal and everlasting. To quote my departed friend
Bill Escott,
"Yesterday is History, Today is a Gift and Tomorrow is a Mystery."
Bill, Jr. and his Lady friend Nichol Shine stopped over for coffee and
mid-morning refreshments on November 18, 2013 before driving to Charlotte,
NC to board their afternoon flight to San Diego. Family and Friends
is a larger part of what makes life so wonderful and worthwhile! Below pix of
Bill, Jr. and Nichol
ready to leave our home:
It was great to have the Porter "kids" together again along with other
family members and friends and the Lord willing of course, hope to do so
again in the future.
In closing on a spiritual note, John 3:16 KJV "For God So
Loved The World, That He Gave His Only Begotten Son, That Whosoever
Believeth In Him Should Not Perish, But Have Everlasting Life."

LEAVING ON A
