HUNTING 2021With Hunting 2020 behind me
now, I started making plans for the 2021 Hunting Season.
I doubt I will do any turkey hunting due to other things to consider such as
tilling up our tomato garden patch and getting ready for the Spring yard
work.
I must be getting "soft" as I would much rather watch the turkeys than
kill/harvest them!
I plan to continue to broadcast shelled corn out for the deer and turkeys
until the Spring growth starts, checking the game camera to see what
activity is taking place.
Below a couple pixs of activity on the SD card that I viewed on January
7, 2021:
Last January, there were several ole Boss Gobbler Long beards visiting my
broadcast corn feeding area and hopefully they will be back this year.
I plan to put out some sweet feed and see if the turkeys will eat it.
The deer didn't care for it at all.
RAISED THE TILT ANGLE OF THE STEALTHCAM
I raised the tilt angle of the STEALTHCAM to capture deer coming into the
feeding area at back edge of the feeding area.
FLOCK OF HEN TURKEYS
Hen turkeys are enjoying my broadcast corn and next month the ole Long
Beards should be following those hens.
I do not plan to hunt the wild turkeys, but continue to broadcast shelled
corn for the deer and other game animals to help them through the winter
months until other natural food sources are available.

STUPACRATS
If our Lord tarries long enough and the current 2021
"Stupacrats" in Washington, DC consisting of both
Demoncrats
and Republicans continue to erode our democracy, America might end up
speaking Chinese and having to shoot a
slingshot
or throw rocks for hunting and self-defense.

ANOTHER KNIFE CONVERSION
With some time on my hands before Spring grass cutting, yard work, annual
yard equipment maintenance, tomato planting time, etc., I wanted to do
another knife
conversion using a Victorinox knife and change the handle to a
deer antler. I also wanted to use a 6 inch length blade and shorten it
to around 5 inches for usage as a deer field dressing knife and a utility
knife.
I had one section of antler left from the 8 point buck harvest of 12-10-2018
and decided to make another field dressing and utility knife using a
Victorinox Kitchen Knife 6 inch stainless steel wide stiff blade.
I did not take sequence pixs of the modification of the Victorinox knife
which basically the procedures were identical to the knife I made for Calvin
Jones annotated in the this
hyperlink.
I shortened the blade to 5 3/16 inch length for usage as a utility knife as
well. For field dressing deer, a blade length around 4 to 4.5 inches
is the ideal length in my humble opinion.
My 35MM DSLR camera body mirror definitely needs another cleaning
since there are dust spots showing in the above pix, especially on the upper
left hand portion of the pix. I will address that issue in the very
near future!
During the fabrication of the handle, I had some difficulty getting the
blade tang which had to be reground to about 3/8 inch in width to properly
align with the 3/8 inch hole I drilled in the antler. The hole was not
drilled "perfectly" for proper blade orientation, but made it work with some
"wallowing" out the antler drill cavity. I had to change the grind
angle on the handle that abutted the knife brass finger guard and it
shortened the length of the knife handle more than I like for my large hand,
but it will still work....not the best job I have done, but I didn't want to
discard the antler handle...........grin if you must!
The tip of the knife resembles more of a spear point and/or drop point which
will work great for field dressing a deer, whereas the tip of the blade is
below the spine of the blade.
I am having Harry
Savage of Saxis, VA make a custom sheath for this knife and will
post a pix when the sheath arrives.

DIDN'T LIKE THE ANTLER HANDLE
I wasn't pleased with the above antler handle since it was too short for my
large hand. I had a shed antler that is at least 40 plus years old
that was found behind our former
home on White Store Road and decided to use it.
It was just large enough to fit the finger guard on the above knife.
I band sawed slots into the handle the length of the recessed knife tang and
worked it loose with a chisel. The epoxy glue did a good job holding
the tang into the handle. I gave the handle portion left to our
Grandson Xander McKnight Gonzales, of which had a turkey track medallion
inlaid into it and also the rest of the shed antler that wasn't used.
This antler crown handle fits my hand very well and has much more overall
eye appeal in my humble opinion than the shorter antler handle. I will give this knife a field test this coming hunting
season, our Lord willing of course.

KNIFE WITH HARRY SAVAGE CUSTOM SHEATH
INLAID INDIAN HEAD NICKEL
I inlaid a Indian Head Nickel in the antler crown handle. I couldn't
find the correct size bit to drill the cavity, but purchased a 7/8 inch
diameter Forstner drill bit that would work, however oversized.
I have about forty (40) Indian Head Nickels and only half a dozen wasn't worn
too badly. The mint date on the Indian Head Nickel is 1936.
NATIVE AMERICAN INDIANS GENOCIDE
Our government certainly did the Native American Indians wrong and practiced
genocide via
manifest destiny and wiped out entire
cultures of them, yet "we" point the fingers at other countries for
committing the same type of
inhumane crimes!
I would not trust a Bureaucrat aka Stupacrat regardless of party affiliation and
their die hard supporters in an outhouse with a muzzle on.
Native Americans summed Washington and it's Bureaucrats up very well
during the period of their
systematic destruction during the second half of
the nineteenth century, "White man speak with forked tongue."
For a Native American History Lesson with controversial evidence and
documentation, read
Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee by Dee Brown which might open your
political blindness. It is estimated that between 80 to 100 million
native Americans have died since European settlers came to North and South
America by various diseases and outright genocide.
Looking forward to using this knife in the future, our Lord willing of
course.

GIFTED HUNTING CLOTHES
My good friend for many years, John Gaddy of Polkton, NC stopped hunting
several years ago and gave me a call asking if I wanted any hunting clothes,
of which I replied Yes. I told John I was like a graveyard, didn't
turn no one down......grin if you must!
John said to use what I could and do whatever every I wanted with the rest.
Below is a pix of what John gave me and I will sort through the humongous
amount of hunting clothes. John had the hunting clothes separated for
early warm weather hunting, cooler weather and cold weather. John
being a retired Lt. from the US Navy knows all about organization.
While transferring the hunting clothes from four (4) large totes to the
large trash bags, I noticed there was some high dollar Scent Lock brand
clothes which I told John that I couldn't afford those high dollar clothes
and had to grin just a little too.
I kept some of the hunting clothes that I could wear and donated the rest to
Brenda's Upscale Resale this morning 04-06-2021 who has relatives that are
hunters. I contacted The Anson Cris Ministry and left a message, but
they didn't respond until this morning, whereas they were a couple hours too late.

CALLED LONG BEARD IN
I was working in my basement shop and heard a long beard hammering off
around 11:10 AM which was about 100 yards away and got a couple calls out to
see if he would respond, of which he did.
I had regular clothes on and put a face mask on, gloves and camo hat and he
came within about 35 yards +- and stayed in cover....he looked around
intently for the hen making those "beautimous" seductive yelps and clucks,
but would not come any closer, expecting the hen to come to him.
I could not get a good pix due to foliage, and this was the best one I got:
The past week I have heard a couple long beards sounding off, but do not
plan to hunt them unless they show up real close.
Web page updated by Bill aka Mickey Porter on 04-06-2021.
NO RESPECT
While catching a nap on the living room couch on 04-09-2021 around 5:39 PM,
I kept hearing a gobbler sounding off and raised up and there was a Long
Beard hammering away in full strut less than twenty (20) feet from the
windows. I got up and went down stairs and retrieved my camera and
took a couple pixs, but by the time I got back up stairs he was heading out
of the front yard.
I think the ole boy saw me move the window curtains since he didn't stay
around too long for a proper photo shoot.
He later came back before dark with his girl friend and one of our security
cameras captured a video of them walking across the driveway heading to his
roosting area, of which the next morning he was hammering away from 0630 to
around 0730 hours.

THIS HUNTING SEASON WILL BE A CHALLENGE
On April 19, 2021 while moving a large log from our lower dirt drive way, I
slipped and fell down a steep embankment breaking my right radius bone about
one (1) inch from the wrist which required surgery, two plates and eight (8)
screws.
The broken arm saga is hyperlinked here:
broken arm.
I had another surgery on July 28, 2021 to remove the top plate and screws
which will allow my wrist to bend.
I am thankful to God that my accident was not any worse than it was because
I could have incurred much more severe breaks than my wrist/arm or even
death.
LIQUIDATION OF CAM BOWS AND ACCESSORIES
I decided to sell all my archery equipment and
accessories except that which pertained to the
crossbow.
An acquaintance of several decades was contacted and he agreed to purchase
said equipment, accessories and supplies.
A few pictures of my archery corner before the liquidation that is posted on
my crossbow page.
AFTER LIQUIDATION

PRACTICE PLATFORM AND LADDER REMOVAL
Many decades ago, I fabricated a humongous telescopic platform that must
weight at least 40 plus pounds to use solely for shooting practice arrows at
deer 3D targets.
There is some serious helical in the
arrow fletching above.
The past two years, I have hunted from a ground blind and there is no need
to keep the practice platform and 20 feet metal silo type ladder.
The person that purchased my archery hunting equipment, accessories and
supplies wanted the ladder and I told him the platform went with the ladder
and it was free of charge, of which he agreed to remove it.
STAND AND LADDER REMOVAL
It took my friend several hours to chisel and free the platform and
ladder tree supports, but he endeavored to persevere. I told him, he
had chips flying like one of our local
Pileated white winged woodpeckers
hammering away on a dead Pine tree.
HUNTING BLIND SET-UP
My friend Robert Webster of Hamlet, NC came by on August 28, 2021 and cut a
leaning tree from my shooting lane and helped me set the hunting blind on
the platform.
Below is a pix from 2020 showing the tree in about a horizontal position and
this year it was even lower to the ground blocking a main deer trail on
the left adjacent the little branch.
Below pix with the leaning tree removed.
One of the main deer trails from the hillside to the branch aka creek is no
longer obstructed.
At the end of last hunting season, I removed the feeder and the tin roof
over it. Deer would not eat the Tractor Supply Sweet Feed from the
feeder or broadcast on the ground!
Now it is a waiting game until October when I plan to start deer hunting
with the crossbow, our Lord willing of course and will continue to broadcast
corn, hopefully keeping the deer coming in for some
"free groceries"....grin if you must.
Web page updated by Bill aka Mickey Porter on 09-02-2021.
REFURBISHED GAME TABLE
The above table frame was made from my "rag
archery target" that was recycled and the top was originally
from scrap exterior plywood, of which the plywood finally bit the dust.
I purchased a couple 10' lengths of 5/4 decking boards to replace the dry
rotted plywood, of which the decking boards should last as long as myself.
I later stained the table with some left over stain from the wheelchair ramp
and deck.
I use the table for
scaling and filleting fish and when
skinning
and quartering up deer, prior to placing the deer quarters into
plastic trash bags and then into our basement game refrigerator for several
days to age out before
processing.
It seems like I can find plenty to keep myself busy now that my right
arm/hand is getting stronger from the
broken distal radial bone.
I plan to start crossbow hunting in October, our Lord willing of course.

ABLE TO COCK
CROSSBOW
I shot the Stryker Solution LS crossbow a couple times to verify the point
of aim and it was close enough to harvest a deer.
I didn't have any trouble cocking the crossbow using the rope cocking device
even with my broken arm
on April 19, 2021, however it took a good amount of effort the last few
inches of the draw.
I modified a TenX rope sled to fit the Stryker rail, of which that sled
keeps the crossbow string centered better than the two (2) hooked models in
my humble opinion.
A week or more until I plan to sit in my hunting blind and wait on Mr. or
Mrs. deer, our Lord willing of course.
Web page updated by Bill aka Mickey Porter on 09-23-2021.
RUBE GOLDBERG COCKING DEVICE
I used the above home made winch cocking device in combination with the TenX
rope sled to give my broken
arm some aid, since it was a little challenging cocking the
crossbow the last few inches of the draw.
I also use the home made winch cocking device to decock the crossbow in
combination with a decocking bolt. I place a leather work glove over
the end of the decocking bolt and it reduces the velocity to about nil.
You have to have the decocking bolt in place, otherwise you cannot go from
safe to fire position on the trigger group assembly and there is a little
bit of string tension from the trigger mechanism even with the home made
cocking/decocking device with tension on the string.

RECENT GAME ACTIVITY
The past couple weeks, turkeys and deer have been consuming my broadcast
corn on a regular basis; deer during the night and during the daylight hours
and turkeys during daylight hours.
Below pixs from the STEALTHCAM:
A good mature long beard on the right in the pix above!
The wild turkeys are eating the corn up and will start broadcasting the corn
later in the day to give the deer a chance to consume
more..................grin if you must!

CROSSBOW HUNTING 10-01-2021
October 1st finally arrived and I got into the hunting blind around 3:50 PM.
Birds were very active, especially the Cardinals, both male and female and
would dart in and out of the broadcast corn. The autumnal equinox was
on September 22nd, 2021, marking the first official day of fall. The
Autumnal equinox is one of two equinoxes and occurs when the sun is shining
directly over the equator. The leaves are beginning to
change color to
various shades of yellow, brown, red and various mixtures of hues in
between; falling to the ground and letting us know that winter will be here
before too much longer.
I saw a total of four (4) grey squirrels and a couple of them helped
themselves to the shelled corn. Three (3) raccoons were also in the
immediate area.
The shadows were getting longer by the hour and the sun slowly making its
downward decent
over the ridge with the wind very still making for a good afternoon to be
in the hunting blind for sure. At approximately 6:41 PM a single
average size doe approached the feeding area from my right and was
approximately
17 yards away. She was very cautious on full alert, no doubt smelled
where I walked in and broadcast about 2.5 gallons of shelled corn.
When she was looking away, I eased my crossbow into position on the padded
shooting rail, took the safety off and turned the green dots on to the
proper brightness.
She finally gave me a good broadside shot at 6:58 PM, centered the 20
yard green dot on her vitals, squeezed the trigger and the
lighted nock looked like a green neon bulb as the crossbow bolt passed through the doe and
stuck fast into the ground. The doe took off like greased lightening
and I heard her crash and thrash and knew she was down for the 10 count,
therefore no need to wait around.
She went forty-three (43) yards (later stepped off) up the ridge to my right and it didn't take
but a few minutes to locate her. There wasn't much of a blood trail
since the crossbow bolt was a little high in the lung area and blood
apparently filled her body cavity before spewing outward and as stated, going uphill inhibiting exit wound blood flow.
Above pix where she expired with arrow pointing to the exit hole. I immediately field dressed her there since
I don't plan to hunt the blind for several days to a week and will check the deer
activity out on the STEALTHCAM.
I got a chance to use the
latest knife I made and was very
disappointed with it. The
tip was too blunt/dull and would barely pierce the deer's hide. I will
have to rework the tip of the blade before taking it back into the field for
usage.
As evidenced by the humongous entry hole in the deer's side, the Rage 100 grain
Hypodermic two blade expandable broadhead fully opened!
Above pix taken near the white oak
hanging tree I nicknamed
Tom Dooley aka Dula and
you can better see the crossbow bolt placement; a little high, but still in
the center of the vital area!
I skinned the doe, quartered her up, placed her in our basement game
refrigerator in plastic trash bags not sealed up and will slice, debone and grind
her up in a few days. It should be some beautimous
vittles!
It was a little challenging skinning and quartering the doe due to my right
hand/arm not at full strength yet from the
broken arm on April 19, 2021, but it is
getting stronger by the day!
I couldn't get a good pix for whatever reason with the Canon 30D and will
have to check the camera settings when I have time to do so.
The doe harvest was registered on line.
It is good to be able to enjoy what God has created for us and be good
stewards of his resources.
I give God the Praise, Glory and Honor in all things.

PROCESSED DOE
On 10-05-2021, I sliced the loin straps, deboned and ground the doe. I
had approximately twenty-four (24) pounds of ground venison. I did not
weight the loin straps which will be reserved for myself and the local Grand
Boys for grilling.

RECENT DEER ACTIVITY
Maybe this buck will come out when I am in the hunting blind, however I will
not pass up a doe!

DEER FEEDING AT NIGHT
I crossbow hunted five (5) times in the afternoon and only saw two (2) does
at about dark. STEALTHCAM revealed the deer are feeding at
night. The weather has been in the low 80s lately and the temperature
should get cooler by this coming Saturday 10-16-2021 per the weather
prophets and if no rain, plan to be in the blind mid morning and maybe hunt
the later afternoon as well.
Web page updated by Bill aka Mickey Porter on 10-13-2021.
IF IT IS BROWN, IT IS DOWN
I got a chance to crossbow hunt the afternoon of 10-16-2021 and decided
whatever came out, I was going to harvest it or attempt to do so, our Lord
willing of course. Earlier, while talking with my friend Robert
Webster of Hamlet, NC, we both agreed we were going to harvest whatever came
out first and get back into "The meat man
hunting club" with the motto, "If
it is brown, it is down."
I got into the hunting blind around 3:54 PM and the wind was swirling bad from
all directions. The normal activity such as squirrels, song birds and
mourning Doves were visiting the broadcast corn and helping themselves.
It was dusk dark, still within legal hunting hours which is 30 minutes
before sunrise and 30 minutes after sunset and I believe sunset today was at
6:43 PM, whereas I observed a small doe come out at approximately seventeen
(17) yards from my hunting blind from the right.
Within a few minutes, she gave me a slight quartering away shot, not a perfect
broadside shot and I placed the green 20 yard dot behind her left front leg
and squeezed the trigger on the crossbow. The crossbow bolt with the
bright green nock went through the deer and apparently glanced off the hard
ground and went upward like a DC 747 jet at take off and never saw that
bright crossbow bolt again.
The deer quickly exited to the left and went up the hillside and I think I
heard it crash, but not sure due to the sound of the wind. The blood
trail was easy to follow.
Below is a pix taken where the deer fell:
The doe turned out to be a button buck and went about 40 to 50 yards and
will step the distance off later just for curiosity's sake.
The Rage Hypodermic 100 grain two blade broadhead fully opened upon impact
leaving a devastating entry and exit hole.
The little button buck was immediately field dressed and when I got the deer
home, skinned and quartered placing the deer in my basement game
refrigerator for a few days of aging before deboning, slicing and grinding.
The deer was registered on line.

PC HARD DRIVE CRASHED
My ole seven (7) year+ old HP Pavilion desk top hard drive went out on
11-01-2021 and replaced with another Pavilion. The operating system is
Windows 11 instead of the earlier 8.1 I have been using and it has taken
nine days to get most of the programs back installed and still have a ways
to go and behind on the last two deer harvests.
SPIKE BUCK HARVESTED WITH MUZZLELOADER
The annual Whitetail Deer rut is kicking off her in Anson County, NC and got
a chance to harvest a heavy body spike buck on 11-02-2021 at approximately
6:10 PM from my hunting blind. The spike buck was about 17 yards away
and would have been a great shot with the crossbow, however I wanted a
little extra distance with the muzzleloader, however I didn't need it.
Below a couple pixs of the harvest:
The buck was registered on line.
The spike buck was skinned, quartered up, placed in plastic garbage bags
and aged in our basement game refrigerator to process later.
TAG OUT BUCK
I got into my hunting blind around 6:58 AM on 11-04-2021 and there was a
very light drizzling rain and good shooting light commenced at around 7:30
AM.
I opened a bottle of Golden Estrus deer urine and placed on the flat
shooting rail since the rut is underway and just might draw a buck within
crossbow range.
At approximately 8:30 AM, I observed a buck at least 50 yards or more down
range from my blind and could tell he was trying to find the source of the
scent by the way he was acting. He came across the little creek aka
branch around 40 yards away and slowly headed toward my hunting blind.
At about 20 yards, he stopped and was smelling the ground offering me a
quartering to me shot and as soon as he placed his left leg forward, I had
the green 20 yard crossbow sight dot behind his left front leg and squeezed
the trigger on the crossbow. The buck kicked his legs backwards and
headed straight across the branch and headed uphill and cut back to his right
on a well used game trail.
I removed my heavy hunting coat and Russian type cap I nick named Ivan
Koloff, got my back pack on and checked the arrow that was sticking into the
ground beyond where the deer was standing. I went several yards
up the hillside and started picking up a blood trail and within 30 to 40
yards, the buck was down. The last 10 yards of the track, there was a
huge amount of blood on the ground.
The crossbow bolt exited behind the diaphragm and fat tissue and other stuff
clogged the exit hole, whereas the blood was exiting profusely at the
broadhead entry hole.
As evidenced by the size of the bucks antlers, I am definitely a
meat hunter
and not a horn hunter aka trophy hunter....grin if you must! The buck
was quickly field dressed and my latest
knife worked real well after regrinding the point.
The crossbow bolt Rage Hypodermic 2 blade broadhead fully opened leaving a
humongous entry and exit hole. I wiped the blood off the entry hole to
show the broadhead placement.
Those loin aka back straps were the entire width of the table.
The buck was registered on line to "seal the deal."
I weighted the ground venison I got from this buck and it was 30 pounds.
I sliced the loin straps and tenderloins.

HUNTING UPDATE
I have hunted several times both morning and evening since the last deer
harvest of 11-04-2021 and the deer have been feeding mostly at night per the
STEALTHCAM camera, however the days I didn't hunt or left the hunting
blind too early, a couple good shooter bucks were feeding. That maybe
a good thing since I have tagged out for bucks, but would enjoy getting a
good 35MM photograph of them.
Below a couple pixs from the STEALTHCAM:
Web page updated by Bill aka Mickey Porter on 11-12-2021.
HUNTING UPDATE
I swapped STEALTHCAM SD card yesterday and the deer are continuing to
feed at night. I did not see any deer activity during daylight hours
since the update on 11-12-2021.
There is some hunting pressure and non collared dogs are continuing to run
deer at night and also during daylight hours, whereas it appears the dogs
are doing more deer hunting than I am!
Web page updated by Bill aka Mickey Porter on 11-19-2021.
TOOK DOWN MY HUNTING BLIND
I took down my hunting blind a few days ago and decided to broadcast corn at
another location for gun hunting instead of crossbow hunting since the deer
are basically nocturnal now at that location.
I harvested a small button buck with the muzzleloader on 12-08-2021, whereas
I could only tell it was a doe at that distance.
The little buck was quickly field dressed and when I got it back at my
hanging tree aka Tom
Dooley, I skinned and quartered it and registered it on line.
There will not be much meat from the little buck, but will be some very
tender vittles for sure. I plan to make some country style
venison sausage
with about a 50-50 ratio of Boston butt, ground venison, Legg's seasoning
blend # 10, extra pork fat and add extra sage, etc.
Web page updated by Bill aka Mickey Porter on 12-08-2021.
DEER SEASON 2021 ENDED
At around 1:00 PM, I observed a doe in my feeding area and harvested it with
my .270 Win. Remington BDL making a heart shot. When I got to the
downed deer it was another button buck; field dressed it and later when I
got it back to my hanging tree, skinned and quartered it up. The deer
was placed in my basement game refrigerator for a few days of aging.
I will later grind the entire deer except for the loin aka back straps and
tenderloins which will render some excellent ground venison.
The harvest was registered on line. This ends my 2021 Deer Hunting
Season with all six (6) tags filled and plenty of venison in the freezer(s).
I am thankful for the opportunity to enjoy what God has created for us and
give Him, the Praise, Honor and Glory in all things.
