MOTHER'S DAY 2020This is a copy and
paste introduction from our
Mother's Day in 2016 with the dates changed. This year, Mother's Day
is celebrated on May 10, 2020. For many decades, we celebrated Mother's
Day with our immediate family,
Mom and Pop, friends and a few "in-laws" at our
home, but since my
bride's brainstem stroke about fourteen (14) years ago, we had to cut back on many
of our larger annual events and have relied on restaurants to help fill in the
gap. My bride was the driving force behind such gatherings and she
really misses them held at our home. She did all the planning,
decorating, artistic touches, baking, stove top cooking, etc., and I handled all the brawn stuff on the grill
and deep fried turkeys. I am sure the date on our birth certificate
has a little to do with our scaling back as well........grin if you must!
Both the Adcock and Porter Klan definitely know how to do some serious food
preparation as evidenced by the many hundreds of pixs published on this
website. Whether celebrating at our home or out and about, the friendship
and fellowship shared along with a good meal makes the occasion a lasting
memory!
As far back as I can remember, our families have celebrated Mother's Day
which was indeed a very special day for our Mothers and our Spouses!
The Holiday goes back to the Roman and Greek era, but the
Christian Holiday was instituted in the USA around 1908 and
usually celebrated on the second Sunday in May each year. My bride of
52 years wrote a beautiful poem titled,
"White
Flowers" in memory and honor of her Mother Nellie
Adcock who died August 7, 1974.
My bride aka Joyce, read the poem during a Mother's Day program at The
Wadesboro Church of God and a real tear jerker for sure!
I have a sound file
in .mp3 format which is 5.92 Megabytes, therefore, click on file and save as
instead of streaming the file. I also have a transcript of the poem
here. My
Grandma Della Coley also died that same
year who raised me as her own son and I sure do miss her.
This years Mother's Day Celebration was very low key and we had the local
Porter Klan with us. We do miss our Son Bill, Jr., and his family out
in Vista, California, of which Bill called and left a message and my bride
returned his call later in the day.
With the coronavirus and all the restaurants closed except for take out
and/or drive through, staying at home was the logical thing to do.
There are currently thirty-eight (38) confirmed cases of the coronavirus
here in Anson County, NC and don't think it has peaked yet in my humble
opinion.
I opted to do a pot of
Chicken n Dumplings, but my bride wanted me
to do some hamburgers
on the charcoal grill and hot dogs with baked beans (Van Camps from the can which I
supercharged a little), potato chips and a few condiments. I told my
bride I would also do some venison grilled
back straps aka loin straps for Travis and
Trevor Huneycutt who loves them.
Those attending were:
Joyce aka my bride,
yours truly,
Laura Porter,
Travis and
Trevor Huneycutt,
Lisa,
Lily and
Xander Gonzales.
MOTHER'S DAY FLOWERS
Bill and
Nichol Porter sent my bride the tulips on the right and Travis and Trevor
Huneycutt brought her the flowers on the left. Below are a couple close
ups of the flowers:
I told my bride about mid to late in the week that I forgot to get her a card since I
have been going like a one leg man in a dance contest pared up with a one
arm female wall paper hanger.....grin if you must!
My bad on taking pictures today, of which I didn't take many.
CHARCOAL GRILL PIXS
I believe I grilled about fourteen (14) burgers of which I used a recipe
I call stretch burgers
and they were at least 1/3 pound or more for
most of them and grilled Lily a hot dog wiener.
VENISON BACK STRAPS AKA LOIN STRAPS
I hand cubed the venison back straps as evidenced by the indentations in
the meat.
I still have mental images of
Travis and
Trevor Huneycutt as small boys anxiously
waiting for those back straps to come off the grill. I couldn't grill
them fast enough for those boys.
It was great today to see them still enjoying them like ole times!
My bride looked after the Huneycutt grand boys (Travis was 6 months old)
and Trevor from day one while their Mother
Laura worked and they were our boys for
sure. My bride cared for them until they enrolled in school and would
pick them up after school until my bride went back to work around 2002.
Travis Lee on the left is 25 years old now, if I am not mistaken....time
goes by quickly for sure.
Above is a pix of yours truly and the Huneycutt Grand boys putting out
corn for the deer:
PIXS AROUND THE TABLE
Above pix archived from 2019.
The above is my slice of the Apple Cake and it was delicious.
Lisa and Lily with a good grin going!
Xander McKnight Gonzales with a big chunk of cake. He finished up
his larger burger!
Lily likes the camera too! Both Xander and Lily are "South Paws."
Lily said "Take my Picture" and I got one of her and she immediately had
to view it!
LILY'S ART WORK
Lily was left un-supervised for less than a minute while we were in the
kitchen and dining room; this is the results above. Lipstick on the
wall paper.
Lisa asked Lily what she was doing and she said, she was doing her ABCs.
Hope Mr. Clean will do his job. My bride waited until everyone left
before she related this too me...I just grinned and shook my head; kids are
kids! Lily did the same thing earlier a few weeks ago and I believe I
got a little upset was the reason my bride related the incident to me after
everyone had left today, however the earlier crayon markings cleaned up ok.
We try and
Lily Proof our home as much as
possible, but Lily Girl is very resourceful and will seize an opportunity
very quickly.
Myself and Laura avoided the camera and my bad for not getting more
pictures.
After the meal, Laura, Lily, Xander, Travis and Trevor went out into the
front yard and Lily and Xander kicked and threw the soccer ball around.
We had a great time and wish the West Coast family could have been here
with us. We did have
Mother's Day 2018 with Bill and Nichol at
their home in Vista, CA and had a wonderful time.

LILY PROOFING MY BRIDE'S ROOM
My bride has a small lamp table next to her power lift chair that has a
pull out drawer with all kinds of odds n ends stored and a super magnet for a small
kid such as Lily.
I decided to install a drawer lock on that lamp table and also the main
pull out drawer on the built in home made desk that my bride uses for her pc and
other things.
Below is a pix of the lamp table drawer contents emptied out onto the kitchen
island/workstation:
DRAWER LOCKS INSTALLED
The lock needed a 7/8 (.875) inch diameter hole for the cylinder lock body,
however the closest Forstner bit I have was around .902 inches in diameter which worked out
fine.
As evidenced by the pixs, this room is well used!
The built in home made desk and upper open shelving unit came with the home and serves by bride well and the
main drawer is now Lily Proofed!
LILY'S REACTION TO THE DRAWER LOCKS
The next time Lily was here, it didn't take long before she tried to pull
the drawers open and told my bride, "It is
broke", of which my bride said it is stuck and you better go
get Paw Paw. Lily quickly said, "I will"
and came into the living room and said "follow me" and I went with
Lily into my bride's recreation room. I pulled on
the drawer and said, "It is stuck."
A few minutes later, I noticed Lily had a small metal fingernail file
trying to open the locking device and got a good chuckle to myself.
She knew something went into the drawer lock to open it, since I let her
open and close one of the kitchen island door locks which normally has a key
left in one particular door that doesn't want to close fully and will keep it
locked most of the time.
Below pix of some of the kitchen drawer locks installed on the
island/workstation which is also a "gold mine" for small kids when left alone
for a minute or two.........grin if you must.
NOTE: My bride chastised me a little because the drawers and
doors of the island/workstation needed some
serious cleaning, of which I
used plenty of "elbow grease" and the island/workstation looks good as new now. The back side of the
island/workstation has three bar stools and my bride and myself use it for our meals
instead of the dining room.
We had the kitchen island/workstation custom built by a cabinet maker in
Polkton, NC (now deceased) and asked him to use the 1950s era tongue and groove knotty pine wood to match the walls of the
kitchen and dining room. My bride was
very upset because he used knotty pine plywood instead of the pine
tongue and groove knotty pine boards. It was not what she or I wanted,
but we accepted it anyway. Later, I
located some knotty pine tongue groove boards and had a couple
carpenters install the tongue and groove knotty pine boards on the ends and
back of the island/workstation. At that time, I did not have a
woodworking shop, whereas you needed a table saw to cut the boards with a
forty-five (45) degree miter for the corners.
Counting the kitchen drawer and door locks and the two locks just installed today, there
are a total of seventeen (17) drawer and door locks in service with 15 keyed alike and the
last two keyed alike, but keyed different from the original 15 installed.
This should keep Lily girl at bay for a while and she will seize any
opportunity to get into mischief which is more or less curiosity and
normal behavior!
Above pix of Miss Lily helping her "Paw Paw" make a batch of hot cakes on
05-16-2020. I enjoy watching that "south paw" stir.
She is standing on a small step stool my bride uses while setting on the bar
stool and when Lily is helping Paw Paw wash dishes. It is about the correct height for her
even though she stands on her tip toes......grin if you must.
Due to small business closures brought about by COVID 19, Lily will not let
anyone cut her hair but "Miss" Shannon, whereas Lisa has her bangs pulled up
on top of her head and noticed some had come loose....another grin is in
order!
Lily is certainly a baby doll for sure.
Children are a
blessing from our God and adds so much to ones Life!
Anyone that supports
abortion, the murder of unborn babies is
not a Christian in my humble opinion!
