CLOTHING PROTECTOR STORAGE BOXMy
bride asked me to make her a box to store the clothing protectors which
she keeps on our dining room table and I told her that I would as soon
as I finish up the last of the
ceramic and wood trivets aka pot holders.
Above pix of the Clothing Protectors.
The procedure to make the box is basically the same as I did with the
serving trays (without the brass handle
inserts), therefore I will not do a detailed photo pictorial of each
step in making this simple box.\
FINISHED CLOTHING PROTECTOR BOX
This project is SN 434.
LETS GET STARTED
I went through my stash of curly maple wood left over from several
projects including the
coffee table,
end tables,
custom keepsake
boxes and there was plenty for this small box.
l band sawed a couple pieces of curly maple that was long enough to a
little over 3/8 inch thickness x 4 3/8 inch width. I took them to
the planer and removed the band saw marks.
The box joint router jig was already set-up on the router table and
routed the box joints. I removed the jig and replaced the 3/8 inch
up-cut spiral solid carbide bit to a 7/32 inch diameter to route the
slots in the bottom of the four sides.
The box joints are not perfect, but close enough. I plan to remake
or fine tune the interchangeable fence in the future!
Stop blocks added to the router table to prevent the slot from going
all the way through the box joint, otherwise you would see the slot and
the bottom panel.
CUT OUT THE OPENING ON THE FRONT OF THE BOX
The cut-out in the front of the box to allow easy access to the
clothing protectors was done on the band saw and a sanding drum in the
drill press.
If I were doing a series of the clothing protector boxes, I would
fabricate a router pattern jig.
I rounded the corners of the opening later on the 6 x 48 inch belt
sander. The pieces were sanded and ready for a test fit.
TEST FIT
As stated, I later rounded over the corners in the cut-out. Box
size: 7 5/8 L, 5 1/8 W, 4 1/8 H.
GLUE-UP
I will let the glue set up overnight which is really not necessary
for that length of time, but I like to be sure the glue squeeze out is
hardened which makes sanding and finishing much easier.
Tomorrow, our Lord willing of course, I will finish sand the box and apply a coat of Mohawk Ox Blood
reddish non-grain raising stain and later apply a few coats of Deft gloss lacquer.
NOTE: Last year or two ago, I ordered a maple colored
stain and the supplier sent the Ox Blood by mistake and gave it to me
without charge and this I believe is the first usage of said stain.
It is wild for sure, grin if you must!

MORE BOX JOINTS
I used the last of my scrap aka unallocated aromatic red cedar wood to
make the above box for ultra underwear and also ripped the balance into
13/16 inch strips to make a few 4 inch wood and ceramic
coasters.
